A 30-year-old Puna man is facing a felony assault charge after reportedly attacking his father with a machete on Wednesday in Pahoa.
Hawaii Police Department officers responded about 4:35 p.m. Wednesday to report of an injured 62-year-old man at a business in Pahoa. Upon arrival, officers contacted the man who suffered multiple lacerations to his arms, hands and head.
The man reported that his son, Jason Wayne Benkosky, had attacked him with a machete and was at his residence located in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. The injured man was transported to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment to his injuries, which police classified as serious bodily injury.
Officers responded to the residence where they located and arrested Benkosky without incident. He was held at the police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section continued their investigation.
On Thursday, Benkosky was charged with first- and second-degree assault. Bail was set at $35,000 pending an initial court appearance scheduled for Friday.
